The Cloth shop sells beautiful quality fabrics and several of our sewing students just love it for their special pieces.

The Cloth Shop began trading in 1977 selling designer remnant pieces and stretch fabrics in an upstairs shop in East Ivanhoe.

Since that time their range has grown and so has their store, which now carries exclusive evening wear fabrics through to simple cottons.

The Cloth Shop imports exclusive fabrics from Europe, Japan and India and buy from local suppliers and designers too.

There is over 6500 rolls of fabrics in store, with new things arriving every week.

They have the largest selection of jersey and knit fabrics in Melbourne with a whole room dedicated to them.

Sewing from beginning to end for any occasion, with patterns ranging from Vogue, Perpetual, Butterick, McCalls and Kwik Sew Patterns along with a large selection of Birch haberdashery is in store.

Rathdowne Fabrics & Remnants

The second stop on our Fabric Shop visit in preparation for our Fabric Buying Bus Tour this term was Rathdowne Fabrics & Remnants. 154-158 Victoria St, Brunswick VIC 3056.

They stock a wide range, constantly changing of all types of fabrics.

They actively source new fabrics as well as purchasing excess bolts of cloth from some of Australia best fashion designers.

Bridal and beaded lace, bamboo blends, cottons plain and printed, denim, fake fur, fashion designer fabrics, fleecy, furnishing fabrics, knits, linens, lycra, mechanical stretch, remnants, silks and woollens.

The Fabric Store Melbourne

We’ve been busy checking out some great Melbourne Fabric stores in preparation for our fabric bus tour we’re organising in term 1.

First stop for Jacqueline & our lovely friend and sewing teacher Clare-Louise from The Thrifty Stitcher in London was:

The Fabric Store stock designer dress fabrics, merino wool and Liberty of London prints. Also high quality cotton basics, linens and woollens through to designer printed silks, sequins and leather.

The majority of the fabrics they source are deadstock items, which means that they are end-of-line, mill overruns, cancelled orders or designer excess fabrics. These are fabrics that are deemed a waste product in the fashion industry and would often otherwise end up as landfill.

Over the years The Fabric Store have formed relationships with some of the best designer suppliers, both internationally and locally, in order to bring us an amazing and unique range of stock without the waste and ethical implications of mass manufacture.
